302 stainless steel is austenitic stainless steels containing chromium greater than 18%, it also contains about 8% nickel and a small amount of molybdenum, titanium, nitrogen and other elements. 302 stainless steel is a non-magnetic grade that is not hardenable by heat treating. It is generally used in the annealed condition and is noted for its ease of fabrication and formability.
302 stainless steel is widely used in the stamping, spinning and wire forming industry. This alloy is also used to form springs, washers, screens and cables.

302 stainless steel heat treatment
The austenitic stainless steels are heat treated to remove the effects of cold forming or to dissolve precipitated chromium carbides. The surest heat treatment to accomplish both requirements is the solution anneal which is conducted in the 1850°F to 2050°F range (1010°C to °C). Cooling from the anneal temperature should be at sufficiently high rates through 1500-800°F (816°C – 427°C) to avoid precipitation of chromium carbides.
