Key characteristics of duplex 2205 stainless steel

Posted:2021-01-19 11:10:14
2205 stainless steel is a duplex alloy (duplex stainless steel). Duplex stainless steel has a combination of two phases, ferrite and austenite in approximately equal measure. This allows them to benefit from the advantages of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, leading to increased strength, improved weldability, higher toughness and resistance to several types of corrosion. Commercially, they are also cheaper than austenitic stainless steels due to their lower nickel content.
In this article, we will outline four of the key characteristics of duplex 2205 stainless steel in more detail
1. Cost
The superior strength of duplex 2205 stainless steel represents the opportunity to reduce the volume of material used without compromising on quality. This enables project managers to viably reduce material costs in critical areas.
2. Strength
Duplex 2205 steel has the exceptional tensile and yield strengths characteristic of ferritic stainless steels; far superior to those of austenitic grades. The minimum tensile strength of duplex 2205 is 620 MPa while the minimum yield strength is 450MPa.

3. Corrosion Resistance
Duplex 2205 stainless steel benefits from the physical characteristics of ferrite, but its chemical properties come courtesy of its austenitic crystallography. With high concentrations of anti-corrosive elements like chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and molybdenum (Mo), duplex 2205 boasts superior corrosion resistance to even the tried-and-tested stainless steel Type 316.

4. Stress Corrosion Cracking Resistance
This manifold of outstanding physicochemical properties makes duplex 2205 stainless steel exceptional at withstanding dynamic forms of mechanical stress, such as stress corrosion cracking (SCC). SCC resistance determines the extent to which an alloy can withstand the propagation of flaws, or cracks, in corrosive environments. Duplex 2205 is uniquely prepared to withstand tensile stress in high corrosive and moderate temperature environments, ensuring long-lasting performance with limited maintenance requirements.
